November is Senior Pet Month! We love caring for and celebrating our senior pets, as their golden years are some of the best. After a lifetime of love and unwavering devotion, you want to show your beloved pet the same care and attention she’s shown you. Read our tips below to learn more about caring for your senior pet.
- Schedule veterinarian checkups at least twice a year. The older your senior pet, the more important it is to maintain good health. For younger, healthier pets, we recommend one annual check-up. However, as your pet grows older, it’s important to see your veterinarian more frequently to prevent and treat any illnesses that may arise.
- Be more informed and aware of your senior pet’s condition. Observe your pet on a regular basis to stay on top of any potential symptoms of diseases. In addition to bringing your senior pet in for their wellness exam with us, it’s a good idea to be keeping tabs on their health at home. Any changes in behavior or eating habits should be brought to our attention.
- Avoid overfeeding – obesity can lead to numerous health problems and may shorten your pet’s life. The Paris Road Animal Hospital team is happy to provide dietary and nutritional recommendations specific to your pet to ensure they’re eating the correct quantity and quality of food.
- Keep your pet on a regular exercise routine to help preserve muscle tone and to keep bones and joints strong. Though they may move slower, it’s important to keep moving. Slow walks around the block with your dog and playing regularly with your cat will help keep them in shape.
- Don’t overlook your pet’s dental health. Have their teeth cleaned by your veterinarian when advised, and brush them at home on a regular basis.
